The Landscape
The Gobi desert is the fifth-largest desert in the world. It is a vast region that arcs across the borderlines of southern Mongolia and northern China. Due to its vastness, traveling around the area and seeing all the incredible attractions without the proper planning and an expert guide can be quite challenging. Aside from organizing accommodations, dining, and taking you to see all the attractions, guides can warn you of various dangers and annoyances.
Most of the natural sites are 80-290km from one another, so prepare for long rides. And in case you have motion sickness, take plenty of drinking water and medicine to relieve symptoms.
What to Pack
One of the main things you will experience in the Gobi Desert is the change in the temperature between days and nights. We recommend you pack warm clothing, good walking boots, and sandals.
Don't forget to bring some essential protection, too! Due to the dry climate and strong, direct sunlight, it is vital to bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, chapstick, a bandana, insect repellent, wet wipes, personal medication, and toilet paper.
Visiting Nomad Families
You may get the chance to explore the daily life of a Mongolian nomadic family. A little politeness goes a long way, so if you decide to bring some small gifts, we recommend that to be toys or candies for kids or a bottle of some fine drink for the elders. Your hosts will always offer you a cup of tea or camel milk. According to the rules of their etiquette, you should take it with both hands and at least sip it once.
Limited Internet Access
As we said, the Gobi Desert is a big territory, and more often than not, you won't be able to connect to the internet or easily find a power outlet. We recommend you bring a power bank and buy a prepaid sim card with plenty of data.
Accommodation
In the Mongolian desert, the most comfortable place to sleep is in a ger. Also known as a yurt, the ger is our traditional, round-shaped tent that has been used since the Mongols started nomadic life.
